The Reactor was created in a similar fashion to the SixTen but with even more “Altec” in its interesting bloodline. Dan A of Easy Eye Sound contacted Norman Druce, Atomic’s Design Engineer asking if he could take some old Altec “604s” (612 utility cabs) and make them sound good, a difficult challenge! The flimsy 3/4” cabinets and aging components were clearly not going to make the grade.

Norman designed a box to handle the immense pressures and forces from the 1000 watt 18” rear mounted Sub Woofer. It was also critical to address the unique front opening of the 612 utility cabinet in a way that resulted in minimal diffraction and “holographic” imaging. After several of Nashville’s most successful engineers, producers and mastering engineers heard the radically modified box within a box 4 way “612s” (they no longer used any Altec parts and were up to 3” thick in areas)

Several studios like Electric Lady and many more improvements later we bring you the Reactor 2. We started with same 1kW sub and seemingly unbeatable euro “ring” tweeter. The improvements were made in the 100Hz-3kHzvia the lager paper cone 12” woofer and 3” Volt mid dome (operating over the entire critical 350Hz to 3kHz) the same midrange driver is used in the finest European monitors.

The improvements don’t stop there, the system now includes Ncore based amplifiers with built-in analog active filters for the sub and woofer XO’s, the rest is divided with a classic passive discrete 2nd order crossover. With 2000 Watts on the subs, 500 on the 12” woofer,250 on the 3” mid and 100 Watts on the tweet, every driver has it’s own level control so even without destructive EQ the system can be easily tuned for room acoustics or the listener’s preference.
